SIMEON DJANKOV: BULGARIA IS THE MOST STABLE COUNTRY IN THE REGION
16.07.2012
Bulgaria is the most stable country in the region. This is what Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Simeon Djankov says in an interview for the Austrian Der Standard newspaper. He adds that budget austerity in Bulgaria has been on focus since the outburst of the crisis, with this year\'s budget being a balanced one thus far. Mr. Djankov also comments on the issue of Bulgaria\'s accession to the euro area by saying that the country\'s long-term objective is to adopt the euro as its currency unit. Right now we would prefer to wait and see the direction in which the euro area will go although we meet all quantitative criteria therefor, i.e. deficit, indebtedness, interest rates and inflation, adds Minister Djankov. He points out that if in reforming the euro area it comes to tax harmonization, Bulgaria will follow the example of Denmark and Sweden which do not accept the single currency.
