SIMEON DJANKOV: DECISIONS ON THE DEBT CRISIS SHOULD BE TAKEN BY ALL IN THE EU

14.10.2011

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Simeon Djankov does not support the idea of creating the post of European Commissioner responsible for the single European currency. Expanding the administration has never been a good solution to a problem and in this case the problem is that many countries are undisciplined, commented the Finance Minister in an interview for the BGNES Agency. According to him, the problem is not that there are not enough administrators, but that there are no clear rules and sufficient discipline.

According to Simeon Djankov, the decisions on the Europe\'s debt crisis should be taken by all in the EU. In his words, Bulgaria is part of a union and if the euro area, which is the basis of the EU, fails then the other countries outside the euro area would be in difficult situation, too. \"That is the reason for which we embraced the initial idea for the \"Euro +\" pact and in addition there should be some division of responsibilities,\" commented the Finance Minister. He considers far better the idea of introducing the disciplining rules (the Maastricht criteria) at national level on the analogy of the Bulgarian Financial Stability Pact. Thus, the Member States\' parliaments would be the natural institutions to maintain fiscal discipline and this is a much more powerful mechanism, was categorical the Deputy Prime Minister.

Bulgaria\'s future belongs to the eurozone, but the events in the past two years have changed the speed at which we would like to enter it. The euro will become stronger in time, further believes Finance Minister Simeon Djankov.
