BULGARIA IS AMONG THE FOUR EU MEMBERS MEETING ALL MAASTRICHT CRITERIA

21.05.2012

Bulgaria is among the four EU members meeting all Maastricht criteria for euro area membership, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Simeon Djankov tells Reuters and clarifies that Estonia, Finland and Sweden are among the members adopting the euro as their official currency. The Agency issues an article which concludes that the plans of the few Eastern European states still trying to join the euro area are at risk due to the crisis in the single currency but they insist the bloc should stick to its original rules instead of altering them for countries like Greece.

The Bulgarian Finance Minister shares his view that the euro will survive this crisis and says that Bulgaria still wants to join the EMU. Minister Djankov points out that the dynamic economic situation and the reshaping of euro area institutions do not currently allow to set a timeline for this.
