Coordination Council for Preparation of the Republic of Bulgaria for Euro Area Membership Adopts Communication Strategy for Information and Publicity of Bulgaria’s Accession to the Euro Area
11.11.2022
The Communication Strategy for Information and Publicity of Bulgaria’s Accession to the Euro Area was adopted by the Coordination Council for Preparation of the Republic of Bulgaria for Euro Area Membership.
The adoption of the Communication Strategy is a key step towards the country’s accession to the euro area and corresponds to the Resolution passed by the National Assembly on 27 October 2022 which obliges the Council of Ministers, in coordination with the Bulgarian National Bank, to accelerate the consultations and the negotiations with the European institutions and to accelerate the technical preparations for the introduction of the euro so as to meet the target deadline for adoption of the euro as from 1 January 2024. It is based on the National Plan for Introduction of the Euro in the Republic of Bulgaria as adopted by the Council of Ministers and lays down the principles and the tasks of a comprehensive information and communication campaign; the institutions responsible for the individual activities within the overall campaign; the stages of implementation of activities; the target groups; the information distribution channels, etc.
The purpose of the Communication Strategy is to promote the process of the country’s preparation for accession to the euro area as the exchange of the lev with the euro will affect everyone living or travelling to and from Bulgaria. The information campaign will aim to provide accurate, accessible, comprehensible, timely and comprehensive information about all aspects of introduction of the euro: about the process itself of exchanging the lev with the euro (exchange rate, timing, prices, etc.) and the changes both in the everyday life of the Bulgarian citizens and in the economy, focusing on the consumer protection measures.
Its adoption will allow for the triggering of processes aimed at better awareness and a possibility for answering all questions that the Bulgarian citizens will raise, i.e. rising prices, changing income, fears of inflation resulting from euro adoption.
