SIMEON DJANKOV: TAX ON DEPOSIT INTEREST EARNINGS IS NOT A NEW TAX

The taxation of deposit interest earnings is not a new type of taxation but an abolition of an unjust preference, says the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Simeon Djankov for Darik Radio. He considers that there should be an equal treatment in taxation and this should be the underlying principle of the tax system. \"There should be an equal treatment, which is the idea behind the flat rate\", Mr. Djankov explains his position. Otherwise, the exceptions lead to some speculative capital, he adds. According to him, it is possible to levy a tax on earnings from gambling and from the stock exchange by the end of the year in order to abide by the flat rate concept. He says explicitly that pensions should not be levied and is firmly against a unification of the Bulgarian tax rates with those in the EU but rather for preservation of the low taxation in our country. The Minister of Finance explains the mechanism of levying this tax and discards the fears for the bank secret disclosure.
